Tax Department presents Prinsjesdag Special 2026

18 September 2026 | 14:00

Athora Netherlands' Fiscal Affairs department has traditionally carried out an analysis of the new cabinet plans presented on 'Prinsjesdag'. What do these mean in tax terms?

In the run-up to Prinsjesdag 2026, the Jetten (minority) cabinet was seeking a majority for its budget plans. On the day itself, it became clear that such a majority had not yet been secured. Normally, the presentation of the plans on Prinsjesdag marks (more or less) the end of the process. Now, however, it is more of a starting point. After all, a majority still needs to be found. As is customary, there is a theme. Last year, it was ‘Responsible budgeting for a stronger economy’. This year’s theme is ‘Earning prosperity anew’.

In this fifteenth edition of our Prinsjesdag special, we are taking the same approach as last year. First, we will discuss the key message and the rates set out on Prinsjesdag. We will then focus in particular on the changes affecting financial products in the areas of pension provision and life insurance in 2027. Special attention is given to Box 3. After all, the government had promised to present revised plans, as became clear during the debate in the Senate earlier this year.
